The main event may not be as originally advertised but UFC on Fuel 9 still featured a lineup laced with talent including an appearance from light heavyweight contender Gegard Mousasi who took on Ilir Latifi, a training partner of original headliner Alexander Gustafsson. Latifi was filling in for “The Mauler” after the rising star went down with a cut a little more than a week ago.
Though a spirited scrap, Mousasi’s stand-up proved to be a bit too much for Latifi, allowing him to pepper his adversary with jabs throughout the tilt. Though Latifi launched a late onslaught it proved to be too little, leaving Mousasi to go on and win a Unanimous Decision. The victory improved his overall record to 34-3-2 and was his fourth straight.
Other bouts on the card included a heavyweight tilt between Matt Mitrione and Phil De Fries, as well potential-laden lightweights Ross Pearson–Ryan Couture colliding in the Octagon. Both bouts ended with a strike-based stoppage albeit in very different efforts. Mitrione put De Fries away less than 30 seconds into their showdown, while Couture came out strong but ate a few stiff shots in the second stanza and couldn’t recover.
