The UFC is without one of the year’s most anticipated heavyweight match-ups of the year after it was revealed Alistair Overeem had been forced out of a fight with former champion Junior dos Santos after suffering an undisclosed injury while training for the tilt. The bout was scheduled for May 25 at UFC 160.
MMAFighting was first to report the matter though UFC officials haven’t confirmed the change.
The 36-12 Overeem had an eleven-fight winning streak snapped by Antonio Silva last month. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks before returning to action.
Dos Santos is coming off a strike-based stoppage to current champion Cain Velasquez. Prior to the stumble he’d gone 15-1 with wins over Frank Mir, Shane Carwin, Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson, and Velasquez (who he won the title from).
