New York may be mired in regulatory morass when it comes to pro MMA events, but the amateur MMA scene there has exploded, with a multitude of fight promotions cropping up all over the state. Casting their hat into the ring (or cage) is Fighters Source, an international amateur MMA league that will be coming to the Hammerstein Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan on March 23. What’s on tap? Presumably, a few tournaments, and to that end, the organization is holding fighter tryouts this coming Saturday. From the promoter:

WHAT: Fighters Source™ will be holding tryouts for the “Kings of New York,” the first sanctioned Amateur MMA Tournament in New York State which will be held at Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday, March 23rd at 6:00 pm.
Athletes will selected based on the following variables including these three basic variables – Warm up and Stretch, Drills (Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu) and Anaerobic Conditioning and Capacity. The warm up and stretch will be conducted as a group. The team tryouts will then be divided into 3 different sections: Striking, Takedowns and Ground Techniques. Striking: combinations jab, cross hook, uppercut, head movement, swaying and footwork.
CLASSES AND WEIGHTS OF CONTESTANTS:
• Flyweight: 125 lbs. & Below
• Bantamweight 125.1 to 135 lbs.
• Featherweight 135.1 to 145 lbs.
• Lightweight 145.1 to 155 lbs.
• Welterweight 155.1 to 170 lbs.
• Middleweight 170.1 to 185 lbs.
• Light Heavyweight 185.1 to 205 lbs.
• Heavyweight 205.1 to 265 lbs.
• Super Heavyweight 265.1 lbs. & Above
• 135 and under – 3 pounds
• 135-170-5 pounds
• 171-205 – 7 pounds
For title bouts, contestants may weigh no more than 5 pounds heavier on the day of the bout or contest than their weight at the weigh-in.
