It may not feature a Strikeforce fighter’s debut in the Octagon against a UFC staple, but UFC on FOX 7 received a welcome addition to the lineup today in the form of a featherweight bout between Clay Guida–Chad Mendes. Both men are in the hunt for a title-shot, giving each a prime opportunity to solidify contendership with a convincing win when they lock horns on April 20.
MMAJunkie was first to report the fight, citing UFC President Dana White as the source of the information.
Guida made his divisional debut last month, earning a closely-contested Split Decision over Hatsu Hioki. He holds an overall record of 30-13 with past triumphs against the likes of Takanori Gomi, Josh Thomson, Nate Diaz, and Anthony Pettis.
Meanwhile, Mendes was set to scrap next weekend at UFC 157 before opponent Manny Gamburyan went down with injury. The 13-1 Californian has gone 2-0 since falling to champion Jose Aldo with both bouts featuring finishes in the first frame.
Though Guida did compete under the Strikeforce banner for a pair of bouts in 2006, he has called the Octagon home for more than five years. However, many of the evening’s other featured fights include the UFC unveiling of recent Strikeforce products like Daniel Cormier and Gilbert Melendez (who take on Frank Mir and Benson Henderson respectively).
