Michael BispingSo. Bellator’s season opener on SpikeTV last night. Was it everything you’d hoped and dreamed it would be? If your name is Rick Hawn, Patricio Freire, Renato “Babalu” Sobral or Seth Petruzelli, it probably was very much not the kind of night you were looking for. But hey, that’s the fight game, and the bottom line is Thursday nights are now going to be filled with some grade “A” butt-kickery courtesy of Bjorn Rebney and the folks at SpikeTV. Now some news!

  • Bellator lightweight king Michael Chandler steamrolled over the organization’s top contender last night, which can be perceived as both good and bad. As per MMAWeekly, it’s good because Chandler is on the cusp of being the new face of Bellator MMA – and with the departure of Eddie Alvarez, they need one. Unfortunately, the flipside to Chandler’s absolute dominance is the question, “What next?” What next for the man who is so clearly better than anyone else on the organization’s 155-pound roster? Sure, there will tournaments to create challengers for him, but is there really anyone out there not signed by the UFC who could give Chandler a run for his money?
  • It’s full steam ahead for Bellator. Here’s MMAFighting’s take on the House That Bjorn Built, and here’s the postfight presser.
  • It’s hard to dislike the ultra-amiable Vitor Belfort, but leave it to brash Brit Michael Bisping to find a way. Honestly, I don’t think Bisping is happy unless he’s talking smack.
  • It’s never too soon to start talking about Georges St. Pierre’s impending match-up against Nick Diaz. Here’s our own Brendhan Conlon, pontificating and postulating.
