Both Mike Ricci and Al Iaquinta know what it’s like to come close to being crowned an Ultimate Fighter champion only to eventually stumble a few steps before the finish line. Ricci experienced the sorrow of second place when he suffered a decision loss to Colton Smith in December at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale, while Iaquinta dealt with the same disappointment six months earlier after being submitted by Michael Chiesa at the Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale.

With both lightweights currently available for action, Ricci has decided to be proactive by attempting to produce a match-up between the two.

“I keep seeing Al Iaquinta’s name. He is a good fighter. And I am willing to compete against him March 16th in Montreal,” wrote Ricci on his Twitter page.

The UFC is currently scheduled to set up shop in Ricci’s proverbial backyard for UFC 158.

If booked, the bout certainly makes sense from a few perspectives. Not only do Ricci/Iaquinta share the distinction of a TUF Finale loss but they possess similar records and skill-sets as well. Ricci holds an overall record of 7-3 with four TKOs while Iaquinta is 5-2-1 with a trio of strike-based stoppages to his credit.
