UFC middleweight Costa Philippou is fresh off the biggest win of his career, taking out title-contender Tim Boetsch with strikes in the third round of their rumble at UFC 155. Though the victory was his fifth in a row and came against a highly-touted opponent, Philippou isn’t opting to follow the lead of his other 185-pound peers by calling for a title-shot. Rather, he’s looking to further establish his standing in the division by taking out one of two men – Brian Stann or Wanderlei Silva.
Though neither Stann nor Silva is within sniffing distance of the championship, Philippou has a ton of respect for both as well as a genuine appreciation for their approach to in-ring competition. And, with Stann-Silva facing off on March 3 at UFC on Fuel 8, Philippou sees an opportunity he hopes to capitalize on in 2013.
“I still need some time to recover from my fight, and some time off to relax, but I’m definitely looking at the Brian Stann/Wanderlei Silva fight. I’d like to fight one of those guys if possible,” revealed the heavy-handed Philippou in a conversation with MMAWeekly. “Brian Stann would be a great match-up for me. Wanderlei Silva, if he decides not to retire, I think would be able to put on a great fight. We’re both great strikers and it would be nice to fight a striker for a change and show my striking skills and put up and exciting show.”
“It would be an honor to be in the cage with either of them. They’re both legends in my eyes, for different reasons,” Philippou concluded.
All three men are stand-up specialists by trade, setting up a potentially explosive encounter at some point down the road. Philippou has scored TKOs in half of his wins while Stann and Silva have combined for 33 strike-based stoppages in 46 total victories.
