Gilbert Melendez “probably” getting title-shot in UFC debut

Gilbert MelendezStrikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez recently withdrew from his second straight title-defense due to injury, opting out of a January bout with Pat Healy on the organization’s final card. Though Strikeforce may be folding, it looks like Melendez’s return to the ring is still likely to involve gold being on the line, as UFC President Dana White has confirmed “El Nino” is in line for a fast-tracking to the top of the contendership ladder once he joins the world’s foremost MMA promotion.

“He’ll probably come right in and get a title-shot,” stated White in a conversation with MMAWeekly, adding that he’s happy to finally be giving Strikeforce’s roster a chance to shine on a larger stage. “I feel sorry for what happened to them and I’m just happy that they’re coming to the UFC now.”

Melendez holds an overall record of 21-2 with eleven TKOs to his credit. He has come out with his hand raised in his last seven scraps including success against Tatsuya Kawajiri, Jorge Masvidal, Josh Thomson, and Shinya Aoki.

He’ll “probably” get beat and Zuffa will “probably” wish they gave him a warm up.

Bendo walks through Melendez in my opinion… fucking Nate can’t even give him any tips besides “get your cardio up homey”… bendo’s fast pace and strength makes his skill set successful, and that’s not to say his competitors don’t have his level of skillset because alot of them are on par with him in terms of skill set and technique BUT Bendo’s pace, cardio & strength gives him the edge IMO.

I think Gilbert is just as big a threat to Henderson as anybody in the division, if Frankie is taking Ben down then Gilbert should be able to do that and mors as he is bigger and stronger than Edgar, he may not be as fast as ben though so there is going to be problems there. Overall I think it is a pretty even fight but I think Gilbert takes a decision.

Henderson should have Thompson be in his camp for this fight

  • Richard Stabone says:

Nick will have fought (and lost to) GSP by then, so Gil will have the chance to run the record of Cesar Gracie’s 4 horsemen to 0-5 in UFC title fights, if Nick’s previous shot at the interim belt counts.

  • RicM says:

…….absolutely NOT……he should at least get 1 quality win over a top 5 before being handed a title shot. With all the great talent in that division, it would be a slap in the face to other guys that have busted their asses to have him come in and get an immediate shot. And handing him a shot simply because he’s the Strikeforce champ doesn’t amount to a pinch of lizard shit…..that title means nothing anymore, as do any of the other SF titles……
