Lombard v PalharesThis past weekend’s middleweight match-up at UFC on FX 6 between Rousimar Palhares and Hector Lombard was billed as a battle between two talented, extremely dangerous competitors with neither being a lock to beat the other. However, as the fight unfolded, Lombard began to gain a clear advantage and ultimately put Palhares away less than four minutes into the action.

Now it sounds as though there could be a good reason for Palhares’ poor showing. According to the submission specialist, he suffered a broken foot and some ligament damage in the opening moments of the meeting after Lombard checked a kick.

“One of my kicks hit Lombard’s shin below his knee. I heard a snap, and I knew something bad happened,” said Palhares in a statement to MMAJunkie. “From that moment on, I (started) feeling my foot (get) more and more numb and without strength to walk around the Octagon. It was a very complicated situation.”

Palhares also provided a backstage picture of his foot which showed clear swelling, showing that his post-fight comments weren’t simply an excuse but a legitimate factor in the fight. He is expected to receive a specific recovery time after visiting with doctors later this week.

The loss was the second straight for the 14-5 Palhares and marked the first time “Toquinho” had fallen in back-to-back outings.
