Melvin Guillard calls Jamie Varner a coward, has “lost all respect for him”

Guillard v VarnerOne of the tilts many fans were looking forward to last night at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale was the bout between heavy-handed lightweights Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner. Unfortunately, during the preliminary portion of the broadcast it was revealed the rumble had fallen apart after Varner came down ill backstage.

Though the development was disappointing to most and seemingly unavoidable, an animated Guillard discussed the turn of events in an interview with Fuel TV and made it clear he was angry about the way Varner handled things rather than merely disheartened.

“I think what he did was very cowardly. I saw the look in his eyes at weigh-ins. I could tell he didn’t want to fight me,” said Guillard. “I’ll just leave it at that. I’m not going to sit here and bash the guy. I have a level of respect for him as a person, but as a fighter I lost all respect for him.”

Guillard event went on to say he’d never grant Varner another opportunity to face him, though his tune changed when presented with news that UFC President Dana White had revealed the match-up had been moved to UFC 155.

“They might want to have me some other guys lined up and make weight just in case he backs out again,” joked Guillard at the information.

The complete interview with Guillard can be seen below:

  • Creature says:

Kind of ridiculous of Melvins part. Idk if he knew that Varner wanted to fight but the doctor wouldnt let him but if he did it kind of makes him look like a jackass. Maybe he will get some of that respect back after Varner beats him at 155 later this month.

  • Dr.Stoppage says:

Yah, Melvin is sounding like a weiner.
Unless , of course, Brendhan Conlan is just trying to stir the pot!

  • Rece Rock says:

You can’t fake a dr. telling you your not fighting…
From what I remember Rogan said Jamie was puking his brains out and the Dr called it off even with Varner pleading to stay on the card.

I heard about some shenanigans about Varners camp telling officials they want Melvin checked well for greasing and in Melvin’s mind that is was what made Varner getting sick and pulling out all that more trivial and unacceptable.

UFC will wind up putting this fight together simply because of the bad blood that is boiling right about now.

I hope Varner gets the job done, Guillard got paid his show money, right or wrong he should have kept his opinions to himself.

  • JBAR says:

I would be really crushed if I lost the respect of a high caliber person like Melvin……

  • RicM says:

Gee Melvin, here we are two weeks later, and you got your ass handed to ya…………Varner’s a coward eh?? What a complete f#%$ing loser……..
