UFC officials had to do some last-second shuffling this past weekend when middleweight Nick Ring was forced out of a fight at UFC 154 with Constantinos Philippou the morning of the event. Ring and Philippou were originally set to face off on the PPV portion of the card, meaning a bout was bumped up from the FX portion of the prelims which in turn received a match-up from the evening’s Facebook lineup.

Ring has since revealed the reason for his withdrawal, saying a UFC doctor deemed him “unfit to fight” due to a viral respiratory infection.

“It was pretty disappointing,” explained Ring to Full Contact Fighter, understating just how frustrating the scenario must have been.

The 13-1 Ring is a Canadian and would have no doubt received a ton of crowd support had he been able to take to the Octagon in Montreal. He has won three of his four fights in the UFC including a July decision over Court McGee.

Fortunately, it appears Ring shouldn’t suffer any long-term effects from his illness and will be back in action sooner than later, possibly against Philippou on a card in the next few months.
