After two seasons of Friday night playing host, the Ultimate Fighter franchise will return to Wednesdays in 2013 starting in January with TUF 17. The long-running reality series spent a number of years airing mid-week on Spike TV before FOX came into the picture.

News of the change was first revealed by manager Malki Kawa in an interview with the Fight Network. Things have since been confirmed by UFC President Dana White by way of MMAFighting.

The move is believed to have been made in hopes of drawing more viewers given the brand’s current struggle with producing consistently high ratings.

The Ultimate Fighter 17 will feature middleweight contestants split into two teams with one group led by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and the other by smack-talking scrapper Chael Sonnen. The season will culminate in an April finale with Jones-Sonnen throwing down at the end of the month.

UPDATE: An executive from FX has since contacted MMAFighting to dispute the report despite White’s comments on the matter, saying Wednesdays are “highly unlikely” for TUF 17.
