The UFC is less than a month removed from crowning the organization’s inaugural flyweight champion and this evening they will determine the man Demetrious Johnson will face in his first title-defense thanks to a UFC on FX 5 tilt between talented 125ers John Dodson (13-5) and Jussier Formiga (14-1). The match-up received “top contendership” status earlier this week, leaving Dodson especially focused on performing well inside the Octagon once the cage door closes.

“It gives me more motivation to go ahead to knock this guy out quick and then get home and get to studying,” said the Ultimate Fighter 14 winner in an interview with Fuel TV after weighing in for the bout.

In terms of how Dodson hopes to enact his plan, “The Magician” isn’t looking to pull a rabbit out of his hat and has apparently put some solid time into studying tape of Formiga’s only professional loss.

“Be faster than him like Ian McCall was,” said Dodson of his approach. “I’m gonna follow the same gameplan – stick and move – and make sure I can actually knock him out…have more devastating power than Ian McCall did.”

Formiga fell by way of decision to McCall in February 2011 and has since rebounded by winning five straight scraps with all but one victory coming by way of submission. Comparably, Dodson is riding the momentum of success in his last four fights including two under the UFC banner.
