September has been a rough month for Zuffa where headlining fights are concerned, as Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez suffered an undisclosed injury last week while training for a September 29 title-defense against Pat Healy and has been forced to withdraw from the bout. Unfortunately, based on the inability to find a suitable replacement in time, Showtime officials decided they no longer wanted to air the event, causing Strikeforce to scrap the show entirely.

“Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event,” stated Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in a prepared statement to media. “We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.”

Melendez also sent out an apology to fans via Twitter confirming the news, though “El Nino” remained tight-lipped on his specific health-related issue.

The show marks the third Zuffa-promoted card to see a main event go down in flames due to injury in the past month and second show to be axed as a result (with the other being UFC 151).
