The fledgling Bellator Fighting Championships promotion handed out two belts this past Friday night at yet another event filled with intense action and highlight-reel moments. The show marked the final of Bellator’s exciting first season.

Lightweight favorite Eddie Alvarez improved his professional record to 18-2 after locking in a rear-naked choke on Toby Imada thirty-eight seconds into the second round.

Imada may be best known by fans who recall his semi-finals inverted-triangle submission of the man many believed would eventually face Alvarez in the finals, Jorge Masvidal.

Along with claim to having won Bellator’s first lightweight tournament, Alvarez also pocketed a cool hundred-grand for the honor of being the season’s last 155-pounder standing.

Speaking of Masvidal, the American Top Team product was able to get back on the winning track after having suffered the surprising loss to Imada in his previous outing. With less than ninety seconds remaining in his bout against Eric Reynolds, Masvidal procured a rear-naked choke and produced a submission victory.

Alvarez’s fellow front-runner, Cuban judoka Hector Lombard, also lived up to the expectations he’d been labeled with at the start of Bellator’s middleweight tournament by handing Jared Hess the first loss of his career.

The Oklahoman had previously racked up nine wins and one draw in ten pro fights. After first damaging one of Hess’ eyes in the first round with a brutal punch, Lombard was able to grind his opponent down for a few rounds before eventually opening up a cut on Hess’ forehead causing ringside officials to end the fight 1:41 into the fourth frame.

The win brought Lombard’s overall career standings to 18-2 with his only two losses coming via decision to Gegard Mousasi and Akihiro Gono. The former Olympian is now 14-0-1 in his last fifteen fights.
