Following Benson Henderson’s win at UFC Fight Night 79, the former lightweight champ asked if it had been impressive enough to earn a fight with an unnamed, certain someone…Well, apparently “Smooth” was asking Georges St-Pierre.
Henderson worked his way to a split decision win over Jorge Masvidal on November 28th, and his post-fight actions, left a few people confused. Recently Henderson appeared on “The MMA Hour”, however, and he reported the following (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):
“I heard there were rumors about Georges St-Pierre coming back and how the guy he faces off against, how they have to have impressive performances,” Henderson said. “I was trying to have an impressive enough performance to warrant facing off against Georges St-Pierre.”
“I have always wanted to prove myself as the best fighter on the planet…But I want to prove, to back that up so to speak, [it] by squaring up with perhaps the greatest welterweight in UFC history, Georges St-Pierre.”
Fair enough. Even if you’re not a die hard, GSP fan, it’s pretty hard to argue with the fact that what he’s accomplished is incredible. It’s also hard to dismiss the argument that he is (was) one of the best, most well-rounded fighters the game has known.
GSP aside, Henderson recently confirmed that he’s entering free agency and that he intends to entertain offers outside the UFC. The former lightweight champ was reportedly also asked about his future, in the aforementioned interview. Henderson relayed that he’d like to return to the UFC, but that ultimately he has to think about his family’s financial well being. Fair enough.
