Joseph Benavidez has had two previous chances to become the UFC flyweight champion.
After dominating fellow former top contender John Moraga Saturday night at UFC 187, Benavidez hopes he has done enough to warrant a third shot.
Benavidez out-landed Moraga 113-55 overall, controlling almost a full two rounds of their pay-per-view opener. The Team Alpha Male fighter has now won seven fights at 125 pounds, including three in a row.
“We both came out guns blazing,” he said. “I was a little more well-rounded. Both of us always come to fight and I had to show him (I was more well-rounded).”
Benavidez ate a head-kick early on, but stated after the 15-minute battle that he “didn’t event feel it.”
“Meat was flying everywhere,” he said. “My style (is reckless). I’m reckless, crazy. Every time I watch my fights I say I am going to tighten it up, but than I go to auto-tune.”
Benavidez scored on 3 of 5 takedowns, while Moraga failed on all three. Moraga did hold a 35-34 advantage in significant strikes landed.
