Robert Whittaker Makes Statement In Australia

ufc fight night 65

Robert Whittaker put his power on display for all of the world to see Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 65, flooring Brad Tavares and leaving Australia with a 44-second victory.

After an up-and-down run at welterweight, Whittaker (14-4) decided to move up to middleweight. He’s scored two wins there since and is on a three-fight win streak overall.

The veteran of The Ultimate Fighter, Whittaker landed a left hook, followed by another and swarmed all over Tavares to score his second straight finish.

“I have power, it’s just a matter of landing it,” he said. “I have always known I have power, but the huge weight cuts took it out of me.

“Now, I’ve settled down and the cuts are easier; the results show.”

Whittaker topped Brad Scott to claim TUF: The Smashes title in 2012 and added a TKO over Colton Smith in 2013. However, he lost to Court McGee and Stephen Thompson after that before downing Mike Rhodes and moving to 185.

Tavares (13-4) was coming off a win over Nate Marquardt but suffered just the second stoppage loss of his career.
