Ronda Rousey may be scheduled to fight Cat Zingano at UFC 184 this Saturday, but the bantamweight champ continues to field questions about Invicta featherweight champ, Cris “Cyborg”.
While it didn’t look like Rousey-“Cyborg” would happen for a while, more recently, things have been looking up in that respect. After “Cyborg” called off her plans to move to 135, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta reopened negotiations with the former Strikeforce champ, with the hope that a bout with Rousey would transpire at some juncture.
Well, at Wednesday’s open workouts for UFC 184, Rousey was not surprisingly asked about “Cyborg”, and here is some of what the renowned fighter had to say (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“She can make 135 (pounds),” Rousey said. “She definitely can. The thing is, someone that cheats and makes things easier for themselves is always going to try and make things easier for themselves. That girl needs to learn that you’re not always going to get advantages put in your favor. You need to learn a lesson that you need to do exactly what the other girls do. Stop taking f-cking steroids and make weight.”
Whoa. Now if you’ve followed the whole Rousey-“Cyborg” saga, “Rowdy’s” comments certainly won’t come as a surprise. “Cyborg” tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2011, but it’s worth noting that more recently, she was tested out of competition and reportedly passed. The Brazilian is set to fight Charmaine Tweet this Friday at Invicta FC 11.
The fight will mark the first time “Cyborg” has fought in MMA since 20113, when she laid claim to Invicta’s 145 title by stopping Marloes Coenen. The 29 year-old hasn’t lost a bout since her pro debut in 2005.
Now, if Rousey gets by Zingano on Saturday night, and “Cyborg” defends her title on Friday, calls for the all-star bout will be that much louder. Really, aside from Bethe Correia, and possibly Holly Holm (depending on how she does versus Raquel Pennington), the contender front for Rousey is pretty thin these days.
UFC 184 will be hosted by the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
