Thousands of eyes will be on Alistair Overeem today at UFC on FOX 13, as fans and observer will be looking to see if the decorated heavyweight can defeat Stefan Struve and retain his roster spot with the promotion.
Sure, it could depend on what goes down in the fight, but if Overeem loses, there’s a good chance his UFC run will come to an end.
As any big fan knows, following the “Reem’s” first round, destruction of Brock Lesnar in 2011, the heavyweight has struggled big time. Since the the defeat, Overeem has gone 1-3, and all three of his defeats were by stoppage.
The feared striker has reportedly been doing his best to work his way back to the top of the heavyweight ranks, and earlier this year, Overeem moved his camp to Jackson’s MMA. Although the Dutch fighter was stopped by Ben Rothwell last time out, Overeem has continued to sing the praises of the Albuquerque gym.
Case in point, in a recent interview with UFC.com, here is some of what the former Strikeforce, DREAM and K-1 champ had to say about the renowned facility.
“I can tell you that for me to be here, it immediately felt good and immediately was good. The environment where I train is very important because I’m very susceptible to impulses from my team and from people, so it’s very important to be in a positive environment and keep it positive. That works better for me. I know that everybody has their own thing going – some people like a little tension – but for me, I really need a positive environment and the Greg Jackson gym environment is really positive. Everybody is helping each other. It’s a stimulating environment and I’m learning every day, perfecting every day. For me it works.
Overeem has certainly remained upbeat despite his setbacks, and it will be interesting to see how he does against Struve. It’s one of the reasons today’s card should be a doozy.
UFC on FOX 13 will be hosted by the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
