UFN 50 Gains Heavyweight Bout, Main Event

ufc fight night 50

The UFC has lined up a card to go opposite Bellator that will feature several top names, as Gegard Mousasi and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza now headline UFC Fight Night 50.

Set for September 5 from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, the event will go head-to-head with Bellator 123.

Along with a five-round main event between middleweight contenders Mousasi and Souza, the card also recently gained heavyweight action pitting Alistair Overeem against Ben Rothwell and Matt Mitrione vs. Derrick Lewis, along with Nik Lentz-Charles Oliveira.

Mousasi (35-4-2) stopped Mark Munoz earlier this year, earning a first round submission victory. Prior to that, he dropped a decision to recent title-challenger Lyoto Machida. Souza (20-3) is on a six-fight win streak and will be looking to avenge a 2008 knockout loss to Mousasi.

Overeem (37-13) is coming off a decision win over Frank Mir, while Rothwell (33-9) hasn’t competed since last year due to a suspension for having elevated levels of testosterone.

Mitrione (7-3) was scheduled to meet Stefan Struve earlier this month, but the bout was scrapped when Struve passed out backstage. Lewis (11-2) moved his win streak to five in a row with another first round finish of Guto Inocente in his most recent fight.

Lentz (25-6-2) and Oliveira (18-4) fought back in 2011, with the contest being stopped in the second round after an illegal knee. Lentz has won four of five, while Oliveira is on a two-fight win streak.

Below is the current card for the night:

Middleweight: Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza

Heavyweight: Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell

Heavyweight: Matt Mitrione vs. Derrick Lewis

Featherweight: Nik Lentz vs. Charles Oliveira

Lightweight: Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Chiesa

Featherweight: Sean Soriano vs. Andre Fili

This looks like a pretty good card, I am very glad they gave Mousasi and Souza a 5 rounder. Funny that they can main event a free show but not a ppv. Not to excited for Rothwell vs Overeem. Looking forward to Lentz vs Oliveira, and Lauzon is always must watch.

OFF TOPIC: New news, UFC finally signed Holly Holms, whats the odds as her being Ronda’s next fight?

  • hindsightufuk says:

i see that Alpha, great news. i guess it depends on whether Ronda’s hand/knee needs any work as to whether she gets a straight shot. Also the UFC have just set up Zingano/Nunes at 178 (which is gonna be awesome!) and i guess that winner might get the next title shot instead. good to have some options open.
178 is looking solid for now as well, Jones vs Gus, Yeol vs Kennedy, Cruz vs Mizugaki, and now Cat vs Nunes. hope it doesnt get the injury bug

I just saw an article of the media already hyping Holms as the next Rousey. Really? Don’t get me wrong she was an amazing boxer, but that’s what she was, ya she’s finished all 11 of her fighters by KO, but still she’s 35 and her main skill is boxing/striking, nothing involving the ground, that plays into Ronda’s strengths perfectly. Plus Ronda is young and always improving
