TUF 20 Coach Gilbert Melendez On His Plans To Fill Staff

Former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez has several friends within the MMA community that he can bring in to help fill out his coaching staff for The Ultimate Fighter 20 later this year.

Melendez, who will compete opposite Anthony Pettis on the show before challenging him for the UFC lightweight title, recently talked about his staff with Shoot Media.

“I’ve got to go with my big brother, Jake Shields, who brings so much experience to the table,” Melendez said (thanks to for the quotes). “My stand-up coach Jongsanan Woodenman, he’s my partner at the gym, El Nino Training Center.

“You better believe I called Nick and Nate Diaz already and asked them to come out and make an appearance.”

It will be interesting to get both Diaz brothers and UFC president Dana White in the same room possibly, as the three have had some interesting issues recently. Nick Diaz has turned down a couple of fight offers from White, while Nate Diaz asked for his release from the UFC via Twitter.

Melendez only recently resigned with the UFC after receiving an offer from Bellator MMA.

  • Dufresne says:

I hope this season focuses more on the fights and less on the drama. If they did this season like they did TUF 17, I’ll be happy. It’s also going to be interesting to see how/if Nick Diaz coaches with cameras rolling.

  • AlphaOmega says:

It won’t be, the UFC wants coach drama more then they want anything else. They really showed that when Dana adamantly turned down Forest/Bonnar coaching which would of been awesome. They need to look at the ratings from Chael/Jones, they were hoping itd be full of coach drama but it wasn’t, it was all about the fighters, and it was one of the higher rated seasons because of it.
