Ben Askren Headed To Asia, ONE FC

Former Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren has signed a six-fight, two-year contract with ONE FC.

Askren, who saw his Bellator MMA contract expire after a victory over Andrey Koreshkov earlier this year, appeared poised to sign with the UFC. However, the two sides did not come to an agreement, and the ex-Olympian decided on the Asian MMA promotion for his new home.

Askren confirmed the signing on The MMA Hour Monday. He added that his first opponent should be announced by ONE FC soon, with a timetable of early in 2014 for his debut.

Along with his expected debut, Askren (12-0) will also be competing for AGON WC in the main event of their third event next year.

That’s unfortunate. The UFC is the same organization that signed a former standout wrestler who, at the time, had an MMA record of 1-0. Brock Lesnar showed great improvement in his game and went on to win the title in his 4th pro fight. Why the ufc won’t take an Olympian with a 12-0 pro record is beyond me. Boring fighter who relies on GNP or lay and pray? Maybe… But this is MIXED martial arts and while a guy like Pat Barry who has limited ground skills but a good, exciting stand up game can hang around forever, Ben Askren can’t even get a sniff. It’s become painfully clear to me that the UFC is not about competition, it’s about entrrtainment. Perhaps this is why Dana was go pissed that GSP got the decision over Hendricks. Just a thought.
