TUF 18 Recap: Men’s Semifinal, Coaches Challenge Highlight Episode

It was an interesting episode of The Ultimate Fighter 18 Wednesday night, as we were expected to witness a semifinal in the men’s bantamweight division.

But first, Ronda Rousey defeated Miesha Tate in the coaches challenge, successfully climbing to the top of a wall and earning herself $10,000. Each member of Team Rousey also pocketed $1,500.

Anthony Gutierrez, who advanced after Cody Bollinger failed to make weight, came in at 145.5 pounds the day of weigh-ins for his bout with David Grant. After several hours, Gutierrez hits the official scale at 140, four pounds over.

“You can’t give people heart,” UFC president Dana White says after telling Gutierrez to leave the gym. “He doesn’t have it. This competition weeds out the weak. He is weak.”

Grant moves into The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale finals vs. Chris Holdsworth, while Jessica Rakoczy faces Raquel Pennington for a spot vs. Julianna Pena next Wednesday.

  • Screenplaya says:

A man dies this past September due to cutting weight. Two guys on this season’s TUF are shown mentally breaking while cutting weight.

Why do we not put an end to weight-cutting?

Wouldn’t it be better if Dana was questioning the heart of fighters because of the way they fight, rather than the way they cut weight?

Why do we want weight-cutting to be such a major part of this sport?

If you made fighters weigh-in just before the fight, no one would cut weight. They would diet, and they would fight at their natural weight. Weight-classes are supposed to ensure that people fight people their size. Weight-cutting is a loophole, and it should be closed.

    Dangerous, and needless.
