5 Thoughts from Fabricio Werdum on Fighting Cain Velasquez

More than 17,000 people in attendance at UFC 166 had their eyes glued to the Octagon during the main event meeting between heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and former divisional king Junior dos Santos. However, few folks in the arena were as invested in the outcome as Fabricio Werdum. The Brazilian finisher has been seen as a top contender since finishing Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in June and will almost certainly serve as Velasquez’s next challenger. Werdum recently spoke to MMAFighting about the match-up where he offered up his take on Velasquez’s performance against Dos Santos, how he plans on approaching the champ when they collide, and more. I like Fabricio, I don’t believe he’s going to win but for him to have a shot he needs to really be ready for some serious GNP from Cain. It’s no secret that Fabricio wants this on the floor to try to utilize his BJJ but the absorbtion of shots he’s gonna take might be too much to handle. I’m not saying he can’t, He’s damn good but I just think Cain is that much better right now…….Good fight either way.

I’m looking forward to this fight, I like the fact that Werdum is in his element if taken to the ground and he poses problems for Cain when they get there.

Velasquez has to be favoured here, but I think Werdum has the goods to beat him, it would be amazing if he manages to submit Cain.

Werdum is a solid opponent for sure but I dont see him winning this at all. No way is he able to take Cain down, and his striking has improved a ton but he still lacks the power of a JDS, and Cain walked through that. I think Cain keeps it standing at all times and gets a tko.
