Dana White On BJ Penn: “One Of Biggest PPV Draws In UFC”

Former UFC champion BJ Penn helped push the “smaller” weight classes to the bright lights inside the Octagon.

Penn, a multi-time champion, will coach opposite Frankie Edgar on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. The two former adversaries will meet for a third time – Edgar is 2-0 vs. Penn – in 2014 at featherweight.

“BJ Penn built the 155-pound division at a time when people used to go, ‘Oh, those guys are too small….we don’t want to see the small guys fight,'” said White, during a recent media scrum. “BJ was one of the biggest PPV draws in the UFC at the time.”

White also insisted that the cut from welterweight to featherweight is going well, adding, “he’s almost there now. Wait till you see how skinny he is; it’s crazy.”

Penn last fought at 170, falling to Rory MacDonald.

last time i recall 155 not being a draw was when Jens Pulver was holding the weight class together, not BJ. BJ at no point built the 155 division, he helped at a time when Jens, Uno, Iha, Serra were also the main fighters, but he was never a main eventer in those days, unless the guy he was fighting was a main eventer (Jens, Hughes etc).
when he won the LW title in 2008, then he became a huge draw, but that wasnt when the division was built, just when the UFC decided to bring it back.
i love BJ, one of my all time favorite fighters, but props where props is due, not just where Dana pretends they are due. you wanna talk about building a division, literally, you talk about Jens Pulver

So is Frankie moving back up then?

Nvm I didn’t read the last paragraph, it’ll be weird seeing Penn at 145

Penn looks like Brandon Vera’s mini-me in that pic.
