Chael Sonnen moving back to middleweight after match-up with Mauricio Rua

With the belt off Anderson Silva, UFC light heavyweight Chael Sonnen is ready to dip back down to 185 pounds where he initially emerged as one of the top fighters in the division before giving 205 a go. The smack-spewing grappler confirmed his plans on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight, pointing to a pair of opponents he hopes to face after his meeting with Mauricio Rua at UFC Fight Night 26.

“There are two guys I want to get matched up with: Vitor Belfort, because he’s awesome and he’s on an incredible roll, and Wanderlei Silva, who I’ve heard is going back to middleweight,” said Sonnen. “The landscape has completely changed. I’ve got a new contract and I’m returning to the weight class.”

Sonnen’s freshly-inked deal is for five fights.

The 27-13-1 Sonnen has called out both Brazilians before with each expressing similar interest in an eventual showdown based on a slew of personal insults sent in their direction. Outside of his losses to “The Spider”, Sonnen was 5-1 in the Octagon as a middleweight including victories over Brain Stann, Yushin Okami, and Michael Bisping.

I’m hoping Chael loses to Shogun (which would bump Chael’s losing streak to 3) and at that point they could make the Wanderlei fight happen.

For Vitor, now that the Silva-Weidman rematch is happening, they need to put him in there with Mousasi. I think that’d be a fantastic fight, and I have absolutely no desire to see Chael get in the way of it happening.

It was talked about in another article concerning which Rua shows up….I think Rua is a better ” fighter” but It’s been difficult lately to gauge where he is. Based on that I really believe Chael is going to win this one. And I agree 100% about Gegard and Vitor. Make that fight happen yesterday. Wandy vs Chael would be nice but as much as I loved watching Wandy through the years it’s getting painful to see him in action. I just can’t get it out of my head that the years of brutality are gonna take a toll on him later on in a bad way….Really hope for his sake i’m wrong there…

Some great fights and money to be made for Sonnen at MW. He’s much more likely to compete in this division. Although, if he blows Rua out of the water it’ll be interesting to see if he changes his tune. Belfort, Munoz, Rockhold, Mousasi, Le, Wand and maybe even Rory Macdonald, depending on if he moves up, await.

I want too see Vitor vs Mousasi but I believe Vitor will try and sit and wait (injury) for a title shot. So if that happened and I were the UFC I would throw Sonnen and Mousasi together for the title shot. And having Sonnen with the Mic in hand going at all different directions at Wandy and Vitor is nothing but pure gold. This is why its great for Sonnen to be moving back down. One can only dream.

I hope Chael beats Rua and they can still make the Wandy fight happen. When Wandy was calling Chael out before, it made no sense rankings wise, now it kinda does.
Vitor also called out Chael before his second fight with A.S. and Chael said, win or lose I accept. Now Vitor walks around like his shit don’t stink so I think that fights off. I’d rather see Vitor/Mousasi anyway.
