Antonio Rogerio Nogueira withdraws from UFC 161 due to injury

The injury bug isn’t taking a summer vacation this year, as UFC light heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been forced out of his UFC 161 match-up with Mauricio Rua due to a herniated disc. Though the card is scheduled to unfold on June 15 it appears the organization is seeking a replacement, perhaps looking to please fans already irked after interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao also recently withdrew for health-related reasons.

News of the situation was first reported by SporTV. It is unknown how long “Minotoro” will be out.

Nogueira is on a two-fight winning streak featuring Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans. He holds an overall record of 21-5.

I guess Shogun can layoff the Freddie Roach training. Think Glover can step up on short notice?

  • AlphaOmega says:

Ouch herniated disk, not good. I guess if they really wanted to, although I have no desire to see it, they could put together Machida/Shogun 3 if both parties were interested. Maybe Gustaffson would be interested in taking a fight even though he’s currently trash talking with Bones.

we all know that machida never does late replacement fights….i dont blame him-for some reason i think dana wants to cut him the next time he loses-which would be stupid

  • AlphaOmega says:

He took the Jones fight on a Months notice, which is why he turned down the second fight on a weeks notice, which after the first one turned out, cant really blame him there.

  • hindsightufuk says:

gutted, i was looking forward to this. both in the twilight of their careers (whether you want to admit it or not), thought both guys would have brought the best out of each other.
shame, 161 is starting to look less than stellar. much as i’m looking forward to Rashad/Hendo, i dont anticipate it being an exciting fight

  • sdouglasmc says:

Gustaffson should step up after not being able to compete against Mousassi, by no fault of his own mind you, in a #1 contender fight.

I don’t see how he can claim a title shot when he was supposed to fight in an eliminator to receive the opportunity.

  • Niv says:

That sucks! I think Texiera if he’s interested would be a very good replacement. I’m not sure what else would be a viable replacement fight right now.

  • MCM says:

anyone else wish THIS was the photo in the Clash of the Captions article?

  • AlphaOmega says:

I would of been wrong about Machida taking the fight anyways, rumor is he’s booked to face Davis
