Wanderlei Silva won’t fight Chael Sonnen in Boston

Iconic brawler Wanderlei Silva is still open to fighting Chael Sonnen at some point in 2013 as has been teased for the past few weeks. However, it won’t be taking place at UFC on FS 1 despite rumors to the contrary.

Silva spoke to SporTV about a potential showdown with Sonnen, stating he wanted the bout to take place in front of a Brazilian backdrop but would also be happy to wait until New Year’s Eve weekend.

“I will not fight in Boston,” said Silva. “Sonnen still has not been officially proposed. No one called me offering to fight. Is it interesting? Yes, very. But if it is held, will be after Boston. Before, or in Boston, no. Now, in Brazil would be a dream. I think he’d even have to wear armor and earplugs to walk there.”

“I’m ready for December, in the year-end event,” he added.

The 36-year old slugger continued on to explain he didn’t want to jump back into camp after a busy start to his year. Silva beat Brian Stann in March to earn his 25th knockout in 35 total wins.

The UFC currently has a September stop scheduled in Brazil for a FOX Sports 1 event. It is unknown if Sonnen would be willing to compete against “The Axe Murderer” in Silva’s home country based on some harsh criticisms he has offered up of the nation in the past.

Sonnen will take wandy down and clap his ears til the last bell rigns.

  • MCM says:

Why won’t Wandy fight in Boston, what does he have against it?

I gotta be honest, I’m losing a bit of respect for all these Brazilian fighters when they say they don’t want to fight outside of Brazil, especially when they live here in the U.S. Can you imagine if Bisping, who lives in CA, said he only wanted to fight in England? Or if the Korean Zombie, who also lives in CA, said he only wanted to fight in Korea? I understand wanting to be on the cards that are close to hometowns but why turn down a fight cause it’s not in your home country?

  • Brendhan Conlan says:

The feeling I get from his comments is that he doesn’t want to fight by mid-August more than doesn’t want to fight in Boston.

  • MCM says:

Except for “…Now, in Brazil would be a dream. ”

    but you’re probably right.

  • AlphaOmega says:

Fans could have a lot to do with it too, all Brazilian fighters get cheered like crazy there, where as here, it’s almost always 50/50

  • AlphaOmega says:

On my topic of fans, American fans could learn something from Brazilian fan’s, it seems the most wishy washy cheering happens in the State’s fights
