Nick Diaz’s MMA promotion announces June 22 event

It’s probably not too hard to find a fight in Stockton, California on a Saturday night but, thanks to local product (and UFC welterweight) Nick Diaz, fans in the area will have a chance to see some legitimate scraps go down rather than street-corner scuffles. Diaz’s newly-formed WAR MMA organization recently announced the lineup for the promotion’s inaugural event and there are even a few familiar faces scheduled for action.

According to a press release, Daniel Roberts will face Justin Baesman on June 22 at the Stockton Arena in the evening’s main event. Roberts, who spent some time competing in the Octagon a few years ago, is 14-4 with the bulk of his victories coming by way of submission. Comparably, Baesman holds a career mark of 12-4 and is on a two-fight winning streak.

Also scheduled for the show, WEC veteran Antonio Banuelos will look to improve on his 20-9-1 record against Benny Vinson (4-1). Other announced bouts include Roy Boughton-Liron Wilson, Darin Cooley-Cody Gibson, Mike Persons-Clayton McKinney, and Caleb Mitchell-Evan Esguerra.

Fights will be contested in a ring rather than a cage and elbows will not be allowed.

I lost more interest now that it’s in a ring, I just can’t get into ring MMA. Also is there still no word on if the UFC is going to keep him signed now that he’s also a promoter?

  • MCM says:

Dana said “Welcome to the losing money business.” I don’t think he cares if Nick wants to run a small promotion, just if he competes in it.

  • MCM says:

And I’m getting that Error code every time I click a story, try to go to the main page, or post a comment. Even on the mobile version. You guys working on that Brendhan?

  • AlphaOmega says:

It’s happening more often then it was for me MCM, but I’ve been having a lot of nasty storms here recently, so I’ve just been chalking it up to that.

  • Brendhan Conlan says:

Working lots of bugs out of the new system. We’ll get there.

  • Niv says:

Alpha Omega I actually love that it’s in a ring. I personally hate the Octagon and find the sight lines horrible.

As much as I love seeing quality elbow strikes that also makes some sense as elbows cut far more than they ko. Elbows as a result end up causing more potential stoppages by cut than actual damage.

  • AlphaOmega says:

I think it’s because I didn’t get into MMA until the second Lidell/Babalou fight, so I never saw anything from Pride or any of the older MMA, and now when I watch some of those flash back stuff, it seems the ring makes the action slow down, especially stopping it on the ropes, or under them.
