UFC 160 Results: Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos both earn strike-based stoppages

Tonight’s offering from the UFC has a little something for everyone, as the main card features a decorated wrestler, a K-1 level kickboxer, one of MMA’s best boxers, a hard-hitting Brazilian behemoth with BJJ skills to boot…and that’s just the night’s top two tilts! Headlined by heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez putting his gold up for grabs against Antonio Silva, UFC 160 is also poised to present pairings like Donald CerroneK.J. Noons, Gray Maynard-T.J. Grant, Glover Teixeira-James Te Huna, and Junior dos SantosMark Hunt.

The evening’s early action was solid though had little on the PPV portion of the event. Cerrone peppered Noons with strikes, painting the canvas red en route to a decision win, while Grant and Teixeira went on to make their claims at top contendership with first-frame finishes. Finally, Dos Santos picked up an incredible knockout win thanks to a spinning kick landing flush to Hunt’s face in the final round of their rumble, while Velasquez retained his title with another TKO before the second period came into play. Velasquez’s finish came after landing a solid shot, then attacking the grounded “Bigfoot” to seal the deal.

  • AlphaOmega says:

Always go with Bigfoot, I’ve been right the last two times when everyone said I was incredibly wrong to pick him

  • MCM says:

I picked him over Overeem and Fedor, but also over Cain and Cormier. I want Bigfoot to win but I have to concede Cain is the more likely victor

  • Dufresne says:

Good first round. Payan had the first half, but Stephens took it back with that cut and those big shots at the end.

  • Dufresne says:

Good lord that’s a lot of blood. Props to Payan for not quitting, but damn he lost a lot of blood.

  • Dufresne says:

Nice comeback. Holy shit! That was an awesome post fight celebration. His buddy didn’t even look irritated that he just got body slammed over the cage.

  • Dufresne says:

And the fb feed is down… Fantastic.

  • Dufresne says:

Looks like I’m watching a pirated Spanish feed for now. Better than nothing.

  • Dufresne says:

I love watching Stephen Thompson’s striking, but his cardio is just insulting. He looks better than in his last fight, but there’s still no excuse for a welterweight to have questionable cardio at this level or competition.

  • Dufresne says:

And if this decision goes the way I think it will, Thompson will be looking for a new job in about 18 hours.

  • Dufresne says:

Well, nevermind then. I guess the judges saw things differently. I did miss the first two minutes of the first round, so maybe something impressive happened then that I didn’t see.

  • darth_irritable says:

Hunt and Te Huna. The rest of the card fades into irrelevance.

  • Dufresne says:

Nurmagomedov may have set a UFC record for the number of takedowns in a single fight. This is ridiculous.

  • Dufresne says:

He should get a bonus for mauling of the night. That was one of the most one sided fights I’ve ever seen. Didn’t they say Trujillo was a NCAA wrestler? If so, he either wasn’t very good, or Nurmagomedov is phenomenal grappler.

  • Dufresne says:

    British commercials are hilarious.

  • Dufresne says:

Props to Bruce Buffer for pronouncing that name at all.

  • Dufresne says:

I don’t know why Colton keeps surprising me skill wise, but that is one mean ass pale guy.

  • Dufresne says:

I’ve got it at 1-1 at this point. But I guess I can see it being 2-0 Whittaker. Not sure Colton can recover at this point, he’s definitely beat up after that round and Whittaker looks fresh.

  • Dufresne says:

Wow. Sometimes I hate being right.

  • moosebaby02 says:

    Story got robbed

  • darth_irritable says:

Alright. Let’s go cowboy! For some reason Noons just fills me with scorn.

  • Dufresne says:

Same, Darth. I just can’t stand Noons for an unknown reason.

  • Dufresne says:

Kinda looks like Noons needs to drop a weight class. He’s shorter and fatter than Cowboy. He may still win, but if he can cut weight life might be a little easier on him.

  • darth_irritable says:

Man, the way Jackson runs his corner is just so different from everyone else. He just keeps things so calm.

  • moosebaby02 says:

    With u Darth

  • darth_irritable says:

Noons looks like he ran into a serial killer.

  • moosebaby02 says:

    Ya Cowboy

  • Dufresne says:

Noons got taught the difference between boxing, kickboxing, and MMA. If he doesn’t lose I’m gonna be pissed. He got dominated in all three rounds.

  • Dufresne says:

This should either be fight of the night, or boring ass go to the bathroom of the night.

  • Dufresne says:

Wow, I never guessed that. Especially in the first round.

  • darth_irritable says:

    Wow.

Also, does anyone else think Maynard’s looking like a juiced up Lance Armstrong?

  • Dufresne says:

Also, does anyone else think Maynard’s looking like a juiced up Lance Armstrong?

    You mean, Lance Armstrong?

  • darth_irritable says:

Why do I care what this gambler thinks?

  • moosebaby02 says:

    Ladies and gentlemen…..T J GRANTT

  • darth_irritable says:

    Erm, yes, Dufresne.

Also, Te Huna is not Australian, fuckers, he’s a Kiwi!

  • darth_irritable says:

Oh, man! Balls for Te Huna.

  • Dufresne says:

Teixeira is slowly making a believer out of me. I don’t think he stands a chance against JBJ yet, but he’s definitely on the elite level.

  • Dufresne says:

No matter how much time they have to fill, I guarantee they won’t show Jeremy Stephens v. Estevan Payan. That was an insanely bloody fight.

  • moosebaby02 says:

Duff he will kill JBJ. Trust me

  • darth_irritable says:

Alright! If Buffer announces him as Marko Huntoooooo!!!! I am going to poop my pants in ecstasy.

  • darth_irritable says:

Oh God. It’s Mazagatti. Someone is going to die.

  • darth_irritable says:

That is a hell of a chin on Hunt.

  • Dufresne says:

Much closer fight than I thought it’d be. I figured either Hunt would win by early KO or JDS would pick him apart from a distance.

  • darth_irritable says:

    What. The. FUCK. Just happened.

  • Dufresne says:

Never thought JDS would do that well by just standing against Hunt. When the f*ck did JDS learn to high kick? Looks like we’re headed to either JDS v Bigfoot or JDS v Cain III. great fight. Hate to see Hunt lose though. Looking forward to seeing him against Overeem soon.

  • darth_irritable says:

Wait for the post event interview with Arial Helwani, where Steven Seagal claims to have taught him that kick.

  • Dufresne says:

And holy shit! Mazzagatti did a good job!

  • moosebaby02 says:

Damn wanted Hunt to pull it off for shit and giggles

  • darth_irritable says:

That’s why he was smiling in the interview. He knows it’s a first.

  • darth_irritable says:

Alright Bigfoot. Time to shock the world.

  • darth_irritable says:

That was an early stop my Yamasaki.

  • Dufresne says:

    Wow, that was a shocker… Oh wait…

  • AlphaOmega says:

7-5 in predictions, really sucks for Hunt and Bigfoot. Wasn’t able to watch the PPV though so only caught the last few prelims.

  • MCM says:

also 7-5 but Halloway got robbed so I’m gonna say 8-4. Catch the fights online mma-core

  • AlphaOmega says:

Holloway did get robbed, but I didn’t pick him to win so I’m no too tore up about that

  • Dr.Stoppage says:

    Wow!
How about setting up Bigfoot vs. Mark Hunt ?
    The battle of the spectacles!

  • Dr.Stoppage says:

By the way, I missed the early fights.
    What fight was the bloodbath?
Cerrone made Noons leak pretty heavy, but there’s already stains on the canvas.

  • AlphaOmega says:

i didn’t see it either Stoppage, but if we go off of what Dufresne live commented, it was the Jeremy Stephen’s fight.

  • Brendhan Conlan says:

Yeah, Stephens cut Payan up. There’s a pic of it in the Scrap Book slideshow I posted yesterday.
