Chances are most fans would have a hard time naming the last opponent UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson put away in the cage and for good reason. As it turns out, Johnson’s only stoppage under the Zuffa banner came in 2010 against Damacio Page. Since then he has picked up five wins, all by decision, as well as a Draw.
However, don’t expect “Mighty Mouse” to change his style anytime soon to suit the demands of others. Rather, the 26-year old is perfectly comfortable outpointing opponents based on how he feels he can best utilize his abilities.
“I think my greatest strength is my speed, my conditioning, and my technique. A lot of people just rely on finishing people, and they just go in there. If they don’t finish them, they’re f*cked. I don’t like to rely on that, so I’m just going to go out there and do what I do best, which is just move and stick and be good,” said Johnson in a recent conversation captured by MMAJunkie.
Johnson’s willingness to grind things out in the Octagon comes from his approach to life.
“My saying is, ‘EFD – Every F*cking Day.’ I wake up, go to the gym, train my butt off to pay bills. That’s what I do,” asserted Johnson. “I’m always going to be motivated to get ready for a fight because this is what I do, this is my career, and this provides for my family.”
The 17-2-1 Johnson’s next opportunity to either silence his critics and/or pick up another title-defense will come on July 27 at UFC on FOX 8 where he’ll face John Moraga (13-1). Eight of Johnson’s wins have come by way of decision though he has six submissions and three TKOs on his record as well.
