Matt Mitrione suspended after “offensive and wholly unacceptable” comments about Fallon Fox

Fallon-Fox-FacebookUFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione seemed to have his career back on track after knocking out Phil De Fries in nineteen seconds last weekend at UFC on Fuel 9. However, Mitrione’s future may not be so bright after all, as “Meathead” lived up to his nickname yesterday when he launched into a rant targeted at transgendered fighter Fallon Fox so vicious it ultimately drew heat from the higher-ups at Zuffa.

During a segment on The MMA Hour, the 34-year old blasted Fox for attempting to face females despite being born a man.

“That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak. And I mean that, because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself,” said Mitrione. “And the fact that Florida licensed him because California licensed him or whoever the hell did it, it’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that. The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again, because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”

As result of Mitrione’s remarks, the UFC decided to suspend his contract while reviewing the matter further, citing a “significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct”. No details were offered on when a ruling would be made on his future with the organization.

The UFC’s full statement can be read below:

“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on ” The MMA Hour”.

The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated.

The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”

how long can you suspend someone for that? isnt this the same company whose president likes calling people faggots? dont they hire drug cheats, racists and criminals?
i agree to a point with both parties, transgender is a personal choice, but i dont see how you can get a license to compete professionally as a woman when you were a man. its that simple. anyone who cant see that argument isnt thinking. its not like they just changed their name and their gender, they’re changing the sex of their opponent also, it needs to be considered.

had the UFC fired him for being a dick, i thick, poorly spoken twat even, i could understand that. but how do you suspend someone? how is making those comments ok after 6 months have passed? thats basically their stand. same with the Miguel Torres thing. its naughty unless you apologize and get chastised in public

  • Venom-MMA says:

Doesn’t he have a point? If you’re born a man & want to fight women you have to expect some criticism. Whether you had a sex change or not, if you’re a man, you’re a man and should fight men. I don’t know the history of Fallon Fox in great detail so unless there is a medical reason why he changed sex, he shouldn’t be allowed to fight women. If anything he should fight other transgender athletes. There is a huge grey area here, I dont think Mitrione has done anything wrong by saying his mind, I think he has a point.

  • sides666 says:

I agree with meathead on this one thats fucked up. What a freak show.

  • soundspawn says:

That’s absurd, there is nothing offensive about what Matt said that is not justified and demonstrable. I do not see where he is bashing Fallon for being transgender, which would be another thing entirely, but because Fallon lied (or neglected to mention relevant and important truths if you prefer) and because that gained what experts claim is an unfair advantage against unknowing opponents.

He also is critical of commissions not doing their due diligence while praising those who would fight Fallon anyway.

I get that the UFC wants to be on everyone’s good side politically and socially, but this is a bit much. Maybe he went a hair too far with “freak” but hiding your genetics (even if your hormones have been altered over the last seven years) and then literally being a transgender male fighting women who believe they are fighting other women is certainly immoral.

Does committing such immoral acts without seeing the problem with it make you a “freak”? Semantics I’d say.

Hats off to you Mr. Mitrione, hopefully this suspension is just a PR stunt to keep the bad publicity away.

  • BiG BaD BuLL says:

I feel that his words were clearly taken out of context. He is not calling Fallon names because of the sex change; he’s insulting Fallon as a man that beats women. Check out his FB page, he’s getting some crazy support..

  • hindsightufuk says:

actually Mitrione did insult her(him?) by saying

‘That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak’

i’m fairly certain he is saying that because of the op, not cos she wants to fight women in mma. if you take out that first line out of Matts diatribe then his points are valid, but once you start off by calling someone a freak, you’re fucked

  • AlphaOmega says:

It’s a fine line, because yes technically Fox is now a woman, however genetics don’t change just because a gender surgery is done, and I’m all for equal rights, but it’s a proven fact that genetically men are bigger/stronger then women are. For example if you take Rousey and Faber, two fighters who fought at 145 then moved down to 135 and put them side by side..Faber is bigger.

Hindsight’s right though he shouldn’t of called her a lying sick sociopathic disgusting freak, that’s not his place or his right. So what if he changed to a woman.

  • Angry Mike says:

A woman MMA fighter who used to be a man? That’s one hell of a way to cut weight.

There are a few easy solutions here, though. Have Fallon fight Cyborg. (Fill in the obvious punchline here). Or set up a new division in UFC: Men, women, and women who used to be men.

  • AlphaOmega says:

That’s what Joe thinks should happen Mike, that there should be a transgender MMA division

  • Angry Mike says:

Probably not a lot fighters who meet the criteria unless you give the fans the power to vote specific fighters into the division. That could be kinda fun.

  • mmajosh says:

This is absolute crap. Mitrione did not bash Fox for a “sexual” decision, Mitrione bashed him for trying to fight girls. He is absolutely correct in what he said and all authorities in the MMA world should back him.

  • Screenplaya says:

Wow. I am appalled at a lot of the stuidity shown by Mittrione and some commenters here.

If Fallon Fox is a typical transgender, she is a woman born with man parts. She has likely always felt like a woman. Wanting to be a woman is not a freakish thing to her. Wake up, you fucking apes.

Still, I don’t think she can be allowed to compete with women unless there is some way to ensure she has no special advantages.
