Jake Shields-Tyron Woodley in the works for UFC 161

Tyron Woodley - UFC 156Two talented grapplers appear likely to face off this summer in the form of a fight between Jake Shields and Tyron Woodley. Though nothing has been confirmed, a match-up featuring the former Strikeforce stars has been linked to UFC 161. The June 15 event is expected to take place in Canada though no specific location has been given an official thumbs up.

MMAJunkie was first to report the potential rumble, citing sources close to the situation.

Shields is returning to the welterweight division after attempting to move back up to 185 pounds where he held Strikeforce gold. The 27-6-1 Californian has ten submissions to his credit in addition to impressive wins over the likes of Carlos Condit, Yushin Okami, and Dan Henderson.

The scrap is sure to make Woodley happy considering the 11-1 grappler called Shields out shortly after finishing Jay Hieron earlier this month in his Octagon debut. The stoppage was the seventh of Woodley’s career.

should be another decent name win for the woodey

  • fanoftna33 says:

Sweet fight and for sure a stern test for both fighters, Shields wants to prove he is still top ten and Woodley wants to be there. I think Jake tires Woodley out and gets a decision but it will be a tough fight..

  • MCM says:

I’m not a Shields fan, but he is a “different” kind of grappler. If he shows up in form, I think he can take Woodley down and possibly submit him. The hard part is going to be taking him down. If this stays on the feet, which is where Woodley should keep it, I think Shields has a more than good chance of waking up flat on his back in the cage. This one all depends on where the fight takes place.

If Shields shows up he can win this one. Not a fan as well MCM but you right about this one. Its all going to come down to who imposes their fight more?
