UFC 156 Bonuses: Frankie Edgar-Jose Aldo take home Fight of the Night honors

Alistair Overeem v Antonio Silva - UFC 156 Media DayTonight’s lineup for UFC 156 lived up to the hype, delivering a number of upsets, finishes, and closely-contested clashes. As might have been predicted, Fight of the Night went to the headlining bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar with each men earning $50,000 as a result. Aldo retained his featherweight title, albeit barely, in a five-round rumble seeing both men land a good deal of offense.

Meanwhile, Knockout of the Night was handed to Antonio Silva after “Bigfoot” pulled off the upset by taking out top contender Alistair Overeem. The hard-hitting Brazilian’s finish came in the third round of their tilt after stunning Overeem with a few slick combos and then putting him away with a relentless storm of follow-up strikes. Like Aldo/Edgar, Silva also received $50,000 for his performance.

Last but not least, Submission of the Night went to Strikeforce newcomer Bobby Green for his surprising stoppage of Jacob Volkmann on the preliminary portion of the card. Green survived Volkmann’s relentless takedown attempts to wear him down with punches, eventually ending up in a position allowing him to secure a Rear-Naked Choke. He too earned $50,000 for the distinction.

THANK YOU BIGFOOT, THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS!!! So happy Bigfoot put Overroid the Overrated down. Now we can watch JDS ROYALLY beat his horse eating ass next possibly. Not sure who gets fed to Cain next, but it doesn’t matter, they will lose. Unless they have Cain fight a horse who knows it will be killed, cooked and fed to Overroid if it loses. That might have a chance until it gets popped for PED’S. So great to see ‘reem lose…..again. (Yes, he has lost a few times, bad, and has been Overrated his whole career)

You gotta be an unhappy person if you get satisfaction like that from the demise of others.

Either way, Reem lost this one, but you cant count him out against anyone. He didn’t lose because his skills weren’t good enough, he lost because he was stupid and cocky. JDS vs Reem is still intriguing for me, i cant pick a sure winner.

FOTN? Really? It was a close title fight, but I don’t think it was particularly good. Aldo was content to cruise after he determined he had the first 3 rounds in the bag. Frankie was competitive in the later rounds but never had Aldo in any real trouble. Typical Edgar close decision.

Reem/Bigfoot and Green/Volkman, on the other hand, were freakin’ awesome. Much deserved.

@qat – it’s ridiculous to suggest that Yourdaddydevilandlord “gotta be an unhappy person” for getting satisfaction from Overeem’s loss. Obviously, he thinks Overeem is “Overrated ” (nice) and dislikes the man’s dubious association with performance enhancing drugs. Regardless, there’s no question that Overeem carries himself with a certain arrogance. His lack of respect for Bigfoot’s striking was pretty obnoxious, and even Silva himself had some angry words after the knockout (is he “an unhappy person” too?)

Anyway, I get that you like Overeem and Yourdaddydevilandlord does not (like plenty of other people) … I doubt that really says anything definitive about either of your emotional states in general. Personally, I am very excited to see him fight JDS as well, and I will be hoping for similar fireworks (that KO was the best moment of the whole night).

    Increase the peace.

While i did wanted Overeem to win and fight for the title, i would have written the same thing if the fight went different and he wrote it the other way around.

Its kinda natural and ok to have a little satisfaction or to be relieved if something bad happens to a person you dont like, or if you feel that justice has been done. But as with many things, there are limits. I wrote “satisfaction like that”, because he wrote as if he is on a fucking cocaine rush. Those emotions might feel good for a time, but dont mistake them, because in the end those are negative emotions based on hatred. Thats why i wrote he gotta be an unhappy person.., coz that are quite a lot of negative emotions sipping through his post.

And u really wanna compare the emotions/words of Bigfoot seconds after the stoppage of his biggest fight and a written – which means supposedly thought through – comment by some random person on the internet? C’mon..

have to say this card had me jumping out of my seat more than any other in recent memory, not even for fighters i really follow/support. Woodley, Bigfoot & Green all had me fist pumping and yelling, great card top to bottom. as was Bellators by the way, two great cards in 3 days, loving it

Tyron Woodley got robbed of that KotN bonus, that right hand was devastating. Looking forward to his next fight.
