Chad Mendes meeting Manny Gamburyan for fight on February 23

Manny GamburyanUFC featherweight Chad Mendes wanted an opponent with some name recognition for his next rumble and has had his wish granted. Earlier today the UFC confirmed the former title-contender had been signed for a showdown against Manny Gamburyan at UFC 157, giving the native Californian an opportunity to fight alongside mentor Urijah Faber on the February 23 card.

Since losing to champion Jose Aldo, the 13-1 Mendes has notched back-to-back knockouts with the most recent coming last weekend at UFC on FX 6 against Yaotzin Meza. He also holds past victories against Michihiro Omigawa, Cub Swanson, and Erik Koch.

Gamburyan (12-7) also knows the sting of defeat to Aldo, though he’s failed to find the same success as Mendes since falling to the dynamic Brazilian. Fortunately, “The Anvil” hammered out his issues and got back in the win column this past August when he beat Omigawa by way of decision.

Pretty decent fight but Manny seems to wilt under pressure and Mendes can provide that.

After the outcomes of this past weekend’s fights, I fully expected the UFC to book Mendes vs. Poirier for a legit #1 contender for the title (after the Korean Zombie gets his shot). That’s the fight that makes sense and that fans want to see. Consequently, one has to assume that the UFC is trying to keep Mendes and Poirier on an upward trajectory to maintain a funnel of future title contenders.
