Forrest Griffin withdraws from UFC 155 with knee injury

It looks like the injury bug won’t be taking New Year’s Eve weekend off, as the UFC has lost another main card clash at UFC 155 for health-related reasons. According to UFC President Dana White, co-headliner Forrest Griffin has pulled out of a fight with Phil Davis after suffering some structural damage to his knee while training for the tilt.

“Forrest has MCL tear and ACL strain,” wrote White on Twitter. “20 CCs of blood removed from his knee and the saga continues at the UFC!!”

No timetable for the former light heavyweight champion’s return was mentioned. It is also unknown if the UFC will seek a replacement, though the amount of time remaining tends to indicate the likelihood of such occurring.

UFC 155 also saw Gray Maynard and Chris Weidman drop off the card due to injury. In both cases the vacancies created by their withdrawals were filled.

It would be a quick turnaround but how about Carmont as a replacement?

  • AlphaOmega says:

Ouch, thats what 3 or 4 fighters this yr out with knee injuries?

  • Rich S. says:

Call 2012 the “year of the injury.”

I mean, my god… I can’t remember the last time I checked this site (or any site) without seeing an injury report of some kind.

  • hindsightufuk says:

Francis Carmont is a MW isnt he, plus would most likely get raped by Phil (his record is really quite shite).

even if this is a career threatening injury its probably prolonged Forrests career, cos i’m sure he would have retired after getting fucked over by Phil Davis

  • darth_irritable says:

Holy crap – that picture makes Forrest look like he has Popeye forearms.

  • Richard Stabone says:

I was thinking of carmont’s last fight with Lawlor and mistakenly thinking those dudes were still competing at LHW, which ain’t the case. So scratch that idea… So maybe somebody out of Te Huna (is he healed up yet?), Jimmo, Vera?

I think Forrest was gonna get worked over by Davis so maybe we’ll end up witha better matchup.

  • MCM says:

I like the Jimmo idea. Both relatively young guys in MMA with stellar records looking for that step up in competition.
