Demian Maia-Jon Fitch fight added to UFC 156

Two top shelf grapplers from the welterweight division are now set to lock horns on Super Bowl Weekend at UFC 156 with the addition of a bout between submission-specialist Demian Maia and relentless wrestler Jon Fitch. Both men, former title-contenders, are coming off impressive wins at UFC 153 and will move a few steps closer to the contendership picture if victorious at the event.

Officials from UFC Brazil have announced the February 2 fight. The card is scheduled to feature Jose Aldo defending his featherweight belt against Frankie Edgar with other scraps on the show including Alistair Overeem-Antonio Silva and Rashad Evans-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Maia is 2-0 since dropping down to welterweight, scoring instances of success against Dong Hyun Kim and most recently Rick Story. The 17-4 BJJ ace has nine submissions to his credit and owns past wins over Ed Herman, Dan Miller, Jorge Santiago, and Chael Sonnen.

Fitch got back on the winning track by beating up-and-comer Erick Silva in mid-October, improving his overall mark to 24-4-1. The win was his first since August 2010 due in part to injury.

i like fights that make sense, and this makes sense.
i either wanted to see this or Maia/Diaz, or Kim/Maia rematch or Fitch/Kim or Diaz/Kim
basically any combination of those 4 fighters

This could be a incredibly fun fight, if Maia is in top shape I think he could be the first guy to get a submission over Fitch but he better be ready to go hard for three full rounds or Fitch will overwhelm him. Of course if Fitch decides to keep it standing it could be very close there as well.

I love this fight, I am a big Fitch fan and Maia has gotten back on my good side so far with his WW career. This fight could go either way, if they were to fight 10 times i wouldnt be surprised if they went 5-5. Ultimately I think Fitch takes a close decision, I think Maia will put him in some bad positions but Fitch will tough them out like always and get another entertaining W.

Fitch;s grappling, not just wrestling has proved hugely impressive, i’m looking forward to this one hitting the mat early and staying there for 15 minutes. damn good fight

  • Richard Stabone says:

Maia overwhelmed both the wrestling and size/strength of Chael when he mopped the mat with Mr. Sonnen. I agree with the comments above about this being a great matchup, but Fitch oughtta be realllyyy careful about going to the mat with Maia.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Tacking onto my comments above, if the action goes to the ground Maia could easily finish things while Fitch is extremely unlikely to finish it. Fitch’s key to success will be–as usual–outlasting his opponent and picking up the victory thru sheer will/cardio. But he’ll have to go thru fire to get there. Could easily go either way.

  • AlphaOmega says:

It should be a good fight if Maia doesn’t forget what he is and try to strike the entire fight. If he does, then Fitch has it easily.
