Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez may not be ready to fight at January event

The shoulder injury Gilbert Melendez suffered in September served as a catalyst in the cancellation of a Strikeforce event he was scheduled to defend his lightweight title on, as Showtime opted against airing the card based on his lack of involvement. Unfortunately, it now appears as though the same issue may knock him off a January lineup as well.

Melendez’s father (and manager) spoke about the champion’s health in a recent conversation with MMAJunkie, saying things were still up in the air as “El Nino” was still in the process of recovering from the affliction.

“There’s no definite yes. It all depends if his body is healing on time as we anticipate,” said Gilbert Melendez Sr.

The 2013 show will mark Strikeforce’s first effort since August after also axing an event slated for November based on a number of notable names dropping off due to injury. It is expected to be one of the most stacked shows in the promotion’s history, featuring multiple title-fights as well as an appearance from unbeaten heavyweight Daniel Cormier.

If he can’t fight in Jan SF might as well close the doors, Showtime probably won’t air the card if he’s not on it after saying he will be.

Damn!!-it is such a shame to see someone as talented as Gilbert is, to be fighting for an organization that has consistently robbed him of steady work to the point that an inevitable injury in this trade can near break him-The fans should always come first in any sporting event period
