Injury to Gilbert Melendez causes plug to be pulled on upcoming Strikeforce event

September has been a rough month for Zuffa where headlining fights are concerned, as Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez suffered an undisclosed injury last week while training for a September 29 title-defense against Pat Healy and has been forced to withdraw from the bout. Unfortunately, based on the inability to find a suitable replacement in time, Showtime officials decided they no longer wanted to air the event, causing Strikeforce to scrap the show entirely.

“Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event,” stated Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in a prepared statement to media. “We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.”

Melendez also sent out an apology to fans via Twitter confirming the news, though “El Nino” remained tight-lipped on his specific health-related issue.

The show marks the third Zuffa-promoted card to see a main event go down in flames due to injury in the past month and second show to be axed as a result (with the other being UFC 151).

kill it, please someone kill it. let the fighters earn some money for fuck sake.
fight may never now happen, Pat may never get another chance like that

Watch Showtime put a replay of something in its place instead.

Seriously, can we just send this horse to the glue factory.

Strikeforce just want’s to be like their parent company guys, geeze.

I think they could of done something, just like the UFC could of done something. I feel sorry for Pat who might end up getting massively screwed by this, and the other fighters who needed a pay check, since they are so far and few between with SF.

I guess after 151 this can be considered…

    Business. As. Usual.
