Bellator brings “Babalu” on board for Season 8 debut

Bellator FC bolstered their light heavyweight ranks this week with the signing of Renato Sobral, a former UFC title-contender who held Strikeforce gold as well. Nicknamed “Babalu”, the Brazilian veteran is expected to make his debut in January on Spike TV as part of the promotion’s Season 8 tournament of 205-pounders.

Sobral’s status was confirmed by a Bellator press release where he said, ““I’m really happy to be a part of the Bellator family. This is my new home, and I can’t wait to get into the tournament. My only wish was that it could all be in one night, but I don’t think we can do that, so I’ll just put one more tournament under my belt, and I’m going to take this opportunity and get my shot at the Bellator World Title.”

The 37-9 Sobral last fought in June, stopping Tatsuya Mizuno with a submission less than a minute into their match-up. The victory, his 24th finish, added to other past instances of success in the cage including those against Robbie Lawler, Chael Sonnen, and Mauricio Rua.

What happened to the weight-in articles so we can talk about how Melvin missed weight and has to give up 10% of his purse?

truly nice signing from Bellator, so pleased to see Babalu stop wasting his life and talent in Strikefarce. unfortunately his best years have been wasted post David Heath, he really could have been a contender all these years and had some awesome fights in the UFC against the likes of Griffin, Rampage, Bonnar, Shogun again and so on.
always been a Babalu fan, sweet news

Bellator seems to be picking up a lot of fighters lately from Strikeforce, but since the fighters are basically dying in SF its at least another televised organization to try and get their brand a boost

I wonder if Mo is gonna be in the tourney
