Joe Lauzon earns $100,000 in bonuses for performance at UFC on FOX 4

UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon brought his total number of event-specific bonuses up to double-digits last night after scoring a pair of additional paychecks based on his showing against Jamie Varner at UFC on FOX 4. The two talented 155ers tussled for two-and-a-half rounds filled with back-and-forth action and ultimately a finish from Lauzon.

Lauzon earned Submission of the Night for his Triangle Choke stoppage of Varner, netting him an extra $50,000 for the distinction.

The bout with Varner was also named Fight of the Night, bringing both men another $50,000 on top of their other earnings. It was also the tenth time Lauzon had been handed a performance-based bonus in his UFC career.

Knockout of the Night went to a returning Mike Swick who made his way back to the Octagon after more than two years away from competition to deal with health-related issues. Swick scored the honor – and the $50,000 – by leaving DaMarques Johnson in a puddle on the canvas thanks to some well-placed punches in the second stanza of their scrap.

It was certainly great to see Swick back in the cage, and his fight with Johnson was one I was happy
I DVR’d….but Knock out of the night? My apologies, but that should have gone to Machida. His KO
of Bader was cringe worthy. Swick’s was masssive, especially against a game opponent (nice matchmaking), but Machidas will be replayed over and over for some time. I guess the honor of getting beat up by Jones again is enough of a bonus.

Again, very happy to see Swick back.

Both were great knockouts, I figured Swick would get it just because of the fact that it was a come from behind KO, they seem to award those more.

Plus it’s a nice story in the sense he was out for 30 months prior to the fight.

Either one would have won KO of the night on a different card easily … but for my money, that Swick KO was just godawfulamazing! He caught Johnson’s kick and – in one perfect move – dumped him on his back, and launched all his own body weight, plus the force of the punch, plus the force of the bounce-back when DJ’s head hit the canvas into one mother of all perfect shots.

Watch it again … it’s pretty freakin’ perfect!

  • Screenplaya says:

What an awesome main card! Two of them deserved KO of the night (Swick and Machida) and the other two fights each deserved Fight of the Night. A heckuva good follow-up to the travesty in Calgary.
