Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II set for June 23 in Rio de Janeiro

It’s official! Not only will Anderson Silva defend his title against rival Chael Sonnen this summer but the card, as rumored, will take place inside a Brazilian soccer stadium with more than 60,000 fans expected to attend.

According to an official statement from the UFC, the two will headline UFC 147 on June 23 at Engenhao Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The card is also expected to feature a long awaited rematch between TUF Brasil coaches Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort as well as the featherweight/middleweight finals from the show’s ongoing season.

Silva and Sonnen originally met at UFC 117 where the latter nearly lived up to the extraordinary amount of smack he spewed leading up to the bout by grinding on Silva for the fight’s first four frames. However, with less than two minutes remaining “The Spider” was able to procure an Armbar-Triangle Choke hybrid and torqued Sonnen to the point of tapping out.

Since their encounter Silva has scored a pair of strike-based stoppages against Belfort and Yushin Okami with Sonnen picking up wins over Brian Stann and Michael Bisping. While nearly two years will have passed since their first fight the middleweights’ bad blood still exists with Sonnen questioning Silva’s heart while bringing up the 185-pound champion’s wife and countrymen along the way.

bout time! Lets see if chaels trt comes through for him this time. I would have a lot of respect for a fighter that has low testosterone levels and still gets wins naturally witout juicing.

  • JabCrossHook says:

Gunner fighters can get cleared to use trt as long as they test within the limits. So chael can still juice.

  • THEGUNNER says:

Just think in the first fight he looked way better than any other fight hes his bisping fight he was pumped only in the first roundlille. Id like to see him go without the trt and still look impresive.

This is going to be a toatlly different fight. card looking to be a good one

  • Lord Faust says:

Silva should take this easy. I hope Chael makes it somewhat competitive, but I don’t see how a healthy Anderson Silva loses to Chael.

  • Mad_Hatter_XX says:

I hope Chael wins. Either way it’s gonna be crazy loud. 60k ppl yelling and cheering the whole time should make good viewing no matter who wins.

  • YES! This has taken way too long in the making. I cant wait to see this. Any time The Spider fights history has a chance of being made. Either the strongest championship reign in MMA history continues to dominate or history is made as the greatest MW in history is bettered for the first time since 06…..and that was a DQ. I think Chael’s in real trouble here. He’s got one way to win and that’s to try and repeat last time. Anderson can submit or knock him out. All he has to do is work on his counter wrestling and Chael has no chance. But chael is a very well conditioned and strong minded athelete and if he gets his Jitz defense up, then he might be able to repeat last time.

    cant wait.

  • Angry Mike says:

Talk about a hostile crowd. After all of Sonnen’s statements, Brazilian fans will want his head on a stick. Hopefully UFC will pay attention to security.

  • Rece Rock says:

Silva is gonna put sonnen in a body bag… cheals schtick will be over.
