Fabricio Werdum headed to Brazil for fight with Mike Russow

It looks like there’s one more heavyweight to add to the list of “big name” big-boys who were booked for action over the past week. According to multiple sources, Fabricio Werdum will face Mike Russow in mid-June when the UFC stops in Sao Paolo for their latest Brazilian event. Werdum had publicly lobbied for an opportunity to fight in his native country since re-joining the UFC and will seemingly get his wish based on the rumored bout.

MMAFighting was first to report the match-up though the UFC has yet to confirm anything is officially in place.

While Russow may not match Werdum in terms of fame, few can match the 35-year old’s current winning streak which he improved to eleven straight with a win over Jon Olav Einemo in January. He holds an overall record of 15-1 including four victories inside the Octagon.

The 15-5 Werdum is also coming off a win, having outpointed Roy Nelson at UFC 143 in a highly-entertaining affair. He has also found past success inside the ring against Antonio Silva, Gabriel Gonzaga, and Fedor Emelianenko.

Russow is the type of guy that just shouldn’t be wining fights, and yet here he is. The Brazilian fighters have done extraodinarily well on the Brazilian cards, but this one has the making of an upset. I think Werdum is a rightful top 5 HW but this is gonna be one of his toughest tests in years. I’ll call Werdum in an extremely close, hard fought decision.

  • MMA-LOGIC says:

Russow cant win this. He has no chance at all. If Russow wins this it will be the biggest upset I have seen in a long long long long long long time. Werdum has him in striking, the clinch and if Russow takes him down things just get worse for him. No Werdum via stoppage.

  • MCM says:

On paper, your absolutely right LOGIC. And if Russow wins, it will be a HUGE upset. But for all his flaws, and all the times he’s outclassed, he still keeps winning. I just get the feeling that Russow makes this an incredibly hard fight.
But I won’t be surprised if Werdum ends it in the first either.
