Martin Kampmann: “Sometimes I have a habit to start slugging it out a little bit but not this fight.”

UFC welterweight Martin Kampmann is certainly no stranger to stand-up. A talented kickboxer with seven TKOs to his credit, Kampmann possesses knockout power in both his hands and feet. However, when it comes to facing an opponent with Thiago Alves’ power, as he will Friday night at UFC on FX 2, even “The Hitman” knows it’s best to avoid getting hit.

“I’m gonna try and pick him apart. I’m gonna stay away from those bombs. Sometimes I have a habit to start slugging it out a little bit but not this fight,” said the 29-year old Dane in an interview with the UFC. “He’s got good combinations…he’s real good standing. He’s definitely technical as well and I think it’s gonna make for a great fight.”

Also possibly playing a role in Kampmann’s strategy could be the fact three of his five total losses have come as the result of a TKO while Alves has only suffered a single strike-based stoppage in his career.

Alves-Kampmann will serve as the main event of the show, slated to start on FX at 9:00 PM EST with prelims on Facebook/Fuel TV firing up approximately three hours earlier.

Love Kampmann. I still consider him undefeated at WW and right there in the title hunt.
    I don’t like Alves. Don’t know why, I just don’t like him.
That said, this is a tough fight to call. I think Martin can hang with anyone on the feet. But he has been KO’d before and Thiago hits like a sledgehammer. If Kampmann can pull an Edgar he can take this to a decision, but I think Alves is right in saying that as soon as he tastes leather he’s gonna shoot and try to make this a grappling match. If it goes to the ground, I give the slight edge to Martin.
I still think Kampmann has more ways to win this, but Alves not only hits hard, but knows how to hit and isn’t out there just wining bombs hoping for the 1 punch KO.
If it goes the full 25min, I give it to Kampmann. If not, Alves by TKO in the 1st.

I believe this is one of the last 3-round main events. Once again, the fans lose, as this one could be seriously entertaining and razor-close. I can see the tide turning in the later rounds towards Kampmann. Since it’s a 3-rounder, Kampmann can’t afford to let Pitbull start strong and find himself down a round or 2 before he starts to turn it on. Feel like Karma still owes Kampmann one more close decision win.

Damn, this would have been awesome as a 5 rounder. Well, I’ll still stand by my pick if it goes the distance.
