Jake Ellenberger outpoints Diego Sanchez to raucous approval of hometown fans

The day and network may have changed but the excellent action inside the Octagon remained the same, as the UFC delivered an action-packed event on Fuel TV for the first time in the organization’s history (not to mention a Wednesday).

UFC on Fuel: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez was headlined by streaking welterweight Jake Ellenberger building off his memorable knockout of Jake Shields by taking out original Ultimate Fighter champion Diego Sanchez. The win moved Ellenberger within snatching distance of divisional contendership, though it was almost not to be had after Sanchez made a late comeback to put the 26-year old in some difficult positions. However, Ellenberger weathered the storm and brought home the decision.

The show also featured heavyweights Stefan Struve and Dave Herman duking it out in a co-headlining collision with Struve landing a beautiful uppercut in the second round that essentially sealed the deal with the 6’11 Dutchman pounding “Pee Wee” out shortly thereafter.

* – Buddy Roberts vs. Sean Loeffler was scrapped after Loeffler sprained his ankle during warm-ups for the fight. Both were paid their salary to show

  • Mad_Hatter_XX says:

Hope main event is as good as I think it will be.

When Diego is right dude is tough as nails and Ellenberger has been tearing people up lately.

Hope they try to tear each other apart and leave it all in the cage.

I’ll go with Diego by decision.

  • Dufresne says:

Sucks for Loeffler and Roberts. I wonder how he managed to bust his ankle that badly during warmups?

  • Dufresne says:

+5 for Vagner Rocha’s corner man trying to lip sync Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and only getting the first few lines right before completely making things up.

  • Dufresne says:

Damn! Brookins looked awesome! Nice KO.

  • MCM says:

Either Brookins has some of the heaviest hands in MMA or Rocha has one of the glassiest chins.

  • Dufresne says:

I was thinking that too. Both of those shots did land on the point of the chin, but neither of them looked like they had crushing power behind them.

  • Richard Stabone says:

And I liked that as they hit the mat Brookins set up the heavier punches with an initial bitch slap.

Ellenberger will punish Diego. Just a matter of whether it gets stopped or reaches a decision.

  • MCM says:

    Great F*cking Round!

  • MCM says:

I guess Dave Herman got rid of the name Pee Wee. If he’s gonna keep the man shirt, I’ma start calling him Dirty Dave Herman.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Very nice performance by Struve. He kinda seemed to be going half-speed the entire fight, and ate some pretty solid shots, but in doing so answered some questions about his durability and then just methodically finished the deal once he got the 2nd mount.

As Kenny mentioned about 100 times, it’s frustrating to watch Struve not do a better job using his reach advantage but he does seem to continue to improve just about every time out, which is to be expected from the big, young son of a bitch.

  • MCM says:

    Is Diego expecting Vampires?

  • Sykotick says:

Man!!! That ending was almost a repeat of Ellenberger v Condit lol

  • MCM says:

    Great fight!
really energized crowd, great action, good call by the judges.
    FOTN for sure.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Diego is a tough mother…no denying that.

Pretty much what was expected from Ellenberger, other than the late slip up where he put himself in a pretty dangerous position.

    Good night of fights.

  • Rece Rock says:

Menjivar was getting lit up and took full advantage of Albert switching up his offense…pretty wild.

  • Rece Rock says:

    “Is Diego expecting Vampires?”- mcm

Now that’s fucking funny…. But seriously how fucking intense is Diego Sanchez man you gotta love that dude.

Aaahh my boy Diego didn’t get the win but what a great fight, looking at Jake in the post show you can see didn’t escape unscathed…

So six in a row for Jake guess he gets the nod next

  • MickeyC says:

Diego made the comment”this is the dog fight you did not get to see last time” he also refrenced it once in the pre fight interviews.Almost picking at Condit /Diez. Is this a jab a condit? I know the 2 are team mates, but the diego said he would take a fight with Carlos. Just wondering if there is an issue below the serface that I did not know about.

  • MCM says:

I thought he was angling for a rematch with Diaz. Maybe he’s picking a fight with Diaz cause of the way Cesar talked about his teammate. I don’t know.

  • MickeyC says:

Cesar, not only talked about teammate, but coach, he said it was carlos’e coaching staff that dropped the ball. What a joke. Figured he had to be hunting for Diaz, or hype a possible fight with team mate carlos had he won tonight. But I was a little curious why he made the comment after he lost. Did not know if I missed anything. Do you guys think the “I could not walk or crawl two weeks ago” was lagit?

  • fanoftna33 says:

Great fights, starting with Menjavar vs Albert with a very exciting round and ending with a very good main event. I wonder why T J Dillashaw is on the main card over Brookings? Brookings won TUF and T J got koed. T J is still developing so I am sure he will get better but Damm Brookings looked great.
