Thiago Alves rumored for match-up with Martin Kampmann in March

Fresh off a pair of November wins it appears the UFC may be looking to pair talented welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann in a match-up on March 3 at a yet-to-be-named event. Both men have found a good deal of success inside the Octagon and hold multiple wins over respected adversaries making for what would almost certainly be an entertaining affair if it does indeed take place.

News of the match-up was first reported by MMAWeekly with Alves also publicly discussing the potential bout.

Kampmann is less than a week removed from his hotly-contested clash with Rick Story at UFC 139 where he came away with a Split Decision victory. The well-rounded Dane improved his overall record to 18-5 with the win, adding to past success against the likes of Paulo Thiago and Carlos Condit.

Comparably, the 19-8 Alves beat debuting Judoka Papy Abedi at UFC 138 by picking up the second submission win of his career with the finish coming in the opening round of action. The performance marked the first stoppage for “Pitbull” in more than three years after a stretch featuring five in a row including wins over Karo Parisyan, Chris Lytle, and Matt Hughes.

Tough one to call. Kampmann if it goes the distance; Alves if it doesn’t.

  • I been waitin for this fight for far too long…about damn time.

I think Kampmann is one of the truly elite fighters in the WW division. I’d give him even odds on anyone not named GSP. I had him winning against both Shields and Sanchez. He’s also a better wrestler than he’s given credit for and I think he can take Thiago standing or on the ground. Yes, it’s possible he gets caught, but I still think Martin is head and shoulders above Alves. Hopefully a win here puts him right back into title contention.

This is gonna be a good fight.

Agreed, MCM. I think Kampman outclasses him, however he’s got to be careful.

Kampmann has looked a bit chinny of late, couple of times i thought Story had him wobbled.
much as i’ll be rooting for Kampmann i’m not sure he can take a flush Alves punch and recover well enough
