Injury bug bites again at UFC 133 as Alessio Sakara out of bout with Jorge Rivera

The revolving door of Mixed Martial Artists scheduled to compete on August 6 at UFC 133 turned once again after it was announced striker Alessio Sakara was forced to pull out of a scheduled match-up with Jorge Rivera due to a knee injury he suffered while training for the fight. Today’s news not only marks another adjustment to the injury-plagued lineup but the third time Rivera vs. Sakara has been scrapped for health-related reasons (the other two times being at UFC 118 and UFC 122).

However, though Sakara is sidelined, “El Conquistador” will still see action in Philadelphia as the UFC has revealed 7-2 Constantinos Philippou agreed to fill the vacancy created by the American Top Team product’s absence. Philippou lost in his Octagon debut earlier this year but compiled five finishes in seven wins prior to the bout.

Rivera hasn’t fought since falling in a grudge match against Michael Bisping this past February. The long-time UFC veteran had won four of five entering their semi-controversial scrap including strike-based stoppages against Kendall Grove and Nate Quarry.

UFC 133 has seen a record number of changes to the card with the main event even undergoing a facelift when injured light heavyweight Phil Davis was replaced by divisional icon Tito Ortiz against Ultimate Fighter 2 winner Rashad Evans.

  • Dufresne says:

Seriously??? What is this, the third time this fight has been canceled??? Damnit! I really wanted to see these two go at it finally.

  • THEGUNNER says:

There needs yo be disapline to someone backing out of a fight. These guys are pros they should be training smart.

  • Creature says:

There discipline is not getting a paycheck until next time they fight

  • How bout throwin Rich franklin vs. Jorge….both were trainin and it was a good match back in the day….lets see it again.

  • Oh and I forgot to say, with all these injuries, havin Tito of all people take a replacement and losing Little Nog off the card….Im not so sad havin to miss this one.

Now that i think about it, why not have Rich Franklin fight Rashad instead of Tito…it was a good enough match to market…better than seein a rematch of two dudes I dont really like.
