Sarah Kaufman vs. Liz Carmouche locked for July 22 Challengers event

Former female welterweight champ Sarah Kaufman appears poised for a return to the Strikeforce cage after an April win outside of the organization with a major obstacle standing in the way of her hopes of reclaiming the divisional belt – Liz Carmouche. Assuming things go as planned the fight will take place on July 22 at Strikeforce Challengers 17 in Las Vegas.

News of the likely pairing was first reported by MMAFighting. Five Ounces of Pain has since confirmed with a source close to the situation that bout agreements have been signed and an official announcement should be coming soon.

Carmouche was last seen pounding on current 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen for the bulk of their bout this past March before succumbing to a Triangle Choke early in the fourth round. The defeat marked the first of the former Marine’s professional career after racking up five straight victories including a TKO of Jan Finney at Strikeforce Challengers 12.

Like Carmouche, the only stumble Kaufman has experienced in the ring came by way of submission to Coenen when the two fought last October. Prior to the loss the 13-1 Canadian had beaten a number of notable opponents including current top contender Miesha Tate, as well as Shayna Baszler and Roxanne Modafferi.

Strikeforce Challengers 17 will be headlined by the tie-breaking bout between Bobby Voelker and Roger Bowling after splitting their first two fights, and is a landmark event in the sense it involves the first time Strikeforce has held a show in Sin City.

In terms of style, this is a great match up. Glad to see it happening. it’s also nice to know that Dana and co. are not going to put the boot to the women’s division right off the bat. A lot of people could go without women’s MMA, but I really enjoy it.

    Do it Sarah, do it.

This should be a great fight, Sarah is extreamly good at defending the takedown, but Liz is so strong and has a full camp for this fight unlike her last one so it will be very interesting.

Gonna be a good fight, as warm as a july night in Vegas.. A test perhaps of Kaufmans ground game and Liz’s chance to show good standup against a quality striker.
I need to go to this fight !
