Vitor Belfort draws Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133

VITOR BELFORT IS BACK! “The Phenom” will return to action at UFC 133, taking on the very tough Yoshihiro Akiyama in a middleweight showdown that is sure to bring fireworks to the City of Brotherly Love.

The story was first reported by ESPN UK.

Belfort was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 126, failing to capture the UFC Middleweight Title from current champion Anderson Silva. Prior to the loss though, Belfort had won five straight fights including KO victories over Matt Lindland and Rich Franklin. Prior to UFC 126 this past February, Belfort had not fought since September 09 due to a myriad of injuries.

Originally scheduled to face Nate Marquardt at UFC 128, Akiyama was forced to pull out of the fight due to the tragedies in Japan during March. With those events behind him, Akiyama returns to the cage trying to snap a two fight losing streak. Following a successful UFC debut against Alan Belcher at UFC 100, Akiyama has dropped back-to-back fights against Chris Leben and Michael Bisping. All three fights earned Fight of the Night honors.

UFC 133 is scheduled for August 6 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also on the card is a middleweight battle between hard hitting fighters Jorge Rivera and Alessio Sakara.

Man, this guy gets big fight after big fight

  • Angry Mike says:

Should be a good fight as long as Vitor remembers to KEEP YOUR HANDS UP!

  • fanoftna33 says:

Damm I hope Akiyama at least tries to use his Judo because Vitor will tear him up standing.

  • Creature says:

    Vitor by domination

  • Rece Rock says:

” All three fights earned Fight of the Night honors.”

That says alot… This should be a great fight, hopefully as memorable as the Leben one.

  • boomnutz says:

I think Akiyama better remember he’s good at judo if he wants to stand a chance, he’s got a propensity to get sucked into a fire fight…and that’s not recommended against Vitor

  • Lethal Liquid says:

This is horrible for Akiyama. He’s going to sleep in this one. Because we all know he has slick head movement. Belfort by decapitation Round 1.

  • stone says:

Vitor needs to make a bold statement by KO’n Akiyama early in the fight… Hopefully afterwards they can hook up another fight with a “top 5’er” shortly afterwards… Gotta book Vitor while he’s UNinjured!
